Biography
Sally Wern Comport's thoughtful, conceptual illustrations have been seen nationally for editorial, publishing, advertising and institutional clients for over twenty years. A 1978 graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design, she began her career as an Art Director at several agencies before beginning full-time illustration. In 1983, she established W/C Studio Inc., a commercial art studio, along with her husband and agent, Allan.
Since then, her work has received numerous honors including The Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, Print Magazine, How Magazine and many Addy awards. Ms. Comport's impressive corporate and publishing client list continues to expand as she explores new markets to place her pictures.
Her artwork has been included in several permanent collections, including Women Illustrators from the permanent collection of The Museum of American Illustration. In the fall of 2003, she and her husband began a new venture called Art at Large Inc., specializing in large-scale art commissions and acquisitions for interior spaces and private clients.
Her first children's book, Brave Margaret, for Simon & Schuster, was released in February of 1999. Her more recent books include: Skeleton Man, How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found, The Story of Thanksgiving, Hamlet, The Great Expedition of Lewis and Clark, and American Poetry for Young Readers.
She received her MA in Illustration from Syracuse University in 2000, and she has served on the faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Comport's artwork is represented internationally by artist representatives Shannon and Associates.
Ms. Comport lives with her husband and their two daughters in Annapolis, MD.
