The Eastern Shore town of Crisfield had a main street that was in reality one long wharf. Much of the lower town is built on millions of tons of oyster shells. Crisfieldians liked to say that they “shipped out the oysters and lived on the shells”. This unusual drawbridge connected Main Street with the nearby island of Jersey. (circa 1950)
